HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
Friday, 09 December 2011 18:59 greg
HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.
HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.
webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.
“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.
HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:
- The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
- HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
- Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
- Software will be provided as a pure open source project
HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.

How to fix iOS 5 slowdown on iPhone 3GS
Tuesday, 01 November 2011 15:31 greg
Since upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 the phone has simply been horrible to use. Apps were slow to start, when typing an SMS the letters displayed were seconds behind the actual keys pressed, and responsiveness in many apps was very sluggish.
I started turning things off to see what improvements I could find. The biggest and most noticeable improvement has come from turing iCloud off. My theory is that every time an app started iCloud was checking if it needed backing up and potentially sending data over the network.
If your having similiar issues, try turning iCloud off. Simply go into setting, Tap iCloud and turn everything off. For now I've kept Find my Phone on, but turned everything else off. I will try turning certain features on to see what difference it makes.
new software release (3.0.4) for the HP Touchpad
Tuesday, 18 October 2011 14:34 greg
Given the future of WebOS is currently up in the air it was a pleasant surprise to find HP have just pushed a Touchpad update out a few minutes ago. On Ari's blog he stated:
"We improved performance, added better support for the camera, made connectivity with non-HP phones possible, improved messaging, touched the UI in many places, etc. Also, we’ve got over 1000 applications available for TouchPad through Application Catalogue."
He also teases that more is in the works...
"We have also some very cool development around UI especially in the area of working with many task simultaneously, and using the table screen even more efficiently. The web development model, strong cloud integration, and a fluid and beautiful UI are the cornerstones of webOS."

How to enable and use iMessage in iOS 5
Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:24 greg
So you've done the iOS 5 upgrade and read all about iMessage, but how do you enable and start using it?
The first thing to do is go into settings on your iPhone and find the Message setting.
Touch that and ensure that the iMessage slider is set to on.
At the bottom of the screen you will see Receive at. By default this is set to use your mobile for SMS only. Tap Receive at, when you will see this screen.
Tap Use your Apple Id for iMessage, enter your Apple Id credentials and tap sign in.
Then check the email address is valid and click next
Go back to the message application and when you create a new message to an iMessage user the screen will change to blue and iOS 5 will identify it as a new iMessage.
How to update to Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) TODAY!
Wednesday, 28 September 2011 13:51 greg
The clever folk over at wpcentral have figured a way to force the Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) update to download. I just tried it and it appears to be working it's way through the update on my HTC 7 Pro right now!
The steps below are copied from the wpcentral thread here:
Steps to force a Mango update on phones for which Mango has started rolling out:
- Connect your Windows Phone to a PC and launch the Zune software
- Click on Phone > Settings > Update. Allow the software to tell you whether an update is available. If so, skip this guide. If not continue to the next step.
- Time to force the update. Click another button (any of the options above or below the word Update). Then click the Update button again, and this time disconnect your computer from the internet after 1-2 seconds. Do this by pulling out the Ethernet cable, disabling Wi-Fi, etc. If it says your phone is already up to date, you didn't disconnect quickly enough and need to try this step again.
- Wait 30 seconds or so and Zune should display a notification that an update is available. This is 7392, the first Mango pre-update.
- Now reconnect to the internet and continue with the update process through the Zune software.
- After 7392 is fully installed, you may receive a notification that another update is available. If so, install it now. If not, proceed to the next step.
- If the second update isn't popping up on its own, repeat steps 3-5, causing the 7403 update to appear.
- Install 7403, brave reader. Speeding right along, isn't it? ;)
- Mango time! At this point, Zune should automatically start installing the last update, 7720, aka Mango. If it doesn't happen automatically, force it like we did in previous steps.
- This last step is very important! Celebrate your phone’s new found Mango status by purchasing a mango smoothie at your nearest Smoothie King, Jamba Juice, Baskin Robbins, or similar establishment.
