Comparing iOS, Android and WebOS part 3

Tuesday, 09 August 2011 15:33 greg

This is the third part of my article comparing Comparing iOS, Android and WebOS . I thought it would be interesting to discuss and compare various aspects of the different operating systems, and how they handle events, updates, notifications, multitasking and a few other basic functions. This isn’t meant to be ranking the various operating systems, but I hope it will be useful to others

I have broken the article down into a number of sub articles as follows:

User Interface

Apps inc homebrew and hacks

Multitasking and moving around the device

One handedness

Notifications

Outlook integration

Microsoft office integration

The first part, user interface can be found here and the second part here. This is the third part, where I will discuss multitasking and moving around the device, how you open, close and switch apps.

This is one area where WebOS really shines in my opinion. It has true multi-tasking, user friendly notifications and is very easy to switch between running apps. Unlike Android and iOS, WebOS uses the concept of gestures to control and move between running apps.

NavMii - free Android navigation fixed for 2.3

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

As posted earlier Navmii was released as a free Android navigation app, that doesn't need a data connection to download maps as they are stored locally. There was an issue on 2.3 devices that the program would start and then drop out.

Navmii have announced an update which fixes this issue. I have not had a chance to try it yet, I'd be interested to know if any readers get it working on 2.3.

Adding new features to google mobile search

I like many others use Google maps to search out restaurants, coffee shops etc if I am in a new area. It appears I am not the only one as Goggle have announced the following:

To make it easier for people to search for what’s around them, we’ve introduced new shortcuts to commonly searched local categories, like restaurants, coffee shops and bars, in the form of icons on the mobile google homepage (www.google.com):

Shortcut icons appear at the bottom of the mobile homepage.  www.google.com/m/places ).

On the results page, you'll see a map with markers for your current location and places around you. When you scroll through the results, the map remains at the top of the page and adjusts automatically to the listing you are looking at. That way, you can see the listing information while still getting location context from the map. Tapping on a result will quickly show you more about a place including reviews and other useful details. Discovering great places nearby has never been easier on your mobile phone.

Another mobile improvement we’ve introduced today is an easier way to build longer, more complicated searches. You can now add suggested phrases to the search box and “build” your search piece by piece. This feature is already available on the Google Search app for Android and iOS devices and we’re now making this available on www.google.com from your mobile browser

Comparing iOS, Android and WebOS part 1

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Tuesday, 14 June 2011 19:30 greg

I have been in the fortunate position of having used a number of phones over the years, more recently including the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Desire and ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco in the UK) running Android and the Pre2 running HP’s WebOS.

I thought it would be interesting to discuss and compare various aspects of the different operating systems, and how they handle events, updates, notifications, multitasking and a few other basic functions. This isn’t meant to be ranking the various operating systems, but I hope it will be useful to others. This was written in May and June 2010 and is based on iOS v4, WebOS 2 and Android 2.3.3 running the Cyanogenmod. iOS 5 is just around the corner, so I will update this when that is released.

The one thing to take into consideration with Android devices is that many manufactures choose to add functionality on top of Android, so HTC have their Sense interface and Sony have their own Xperia interface. Additionally there are a number of third party applications to change the look and feel of Android. In order to keep this article short and to the point this is based on stock Android with no additional skins installed, but with the ADWLauncher installed which is the Cyanogenmod default launcher.

I really like how Google is always adding things to google maps, their latest announcement is a hook up to 6 bus companies in the US and Europe so you can see live information as to where your bus is. Simply tap a bus stop in google maps and you will see live departure times in four U.S. cities and two European cities: Boston, Portland, Ore., San Diego, San Francisco, Madrid and Turin.
