I just received this news from Sygic regarding Sygic Aura Lite, which enables prospective customers to make themselves acquainted with Sygic Aura for free. There is no need to be in Paris to try out Sygic Aura Lite at all. With localization services (GPS module) switched off in this application, the real GPS navigation is disabled. Nevertheless, the users anywhere in the world can get a taste of all functions & features, as well as get familiar with the operation and options of the application before they decide to buy a paid version.

More details can be found here on my newly launched iPhone app store.

Sygic Aura is a unique combination of voice guided car and pedestrian navigation, travel guide and a social networking app, the first one to use the 3D acceleration chip of your iPhone. Samo Jurdik, Sygic’s Product & Marketing Manager says: “We believe that screenshots and videos lack the ability to show what Aura is about. The purpose of the Aura Lite version is to give our customers the opportunity to try the stunning 3D rendering speed and unchallenged user experience that is Aura. Enjoy a beautiful piece of Paris and try out yourself all what Aura can do.”

A BBC News app for the iPhone and iPad will be available in the UK from late afternoon on 23 July, the BBC has announced.

The free-to-download apps for Apple products were originally due to be made available in April 2010.

At a press conference today Apple annouinced a number of things

Firstly they said that alot of phones drop signal, they cited the BlackBerry Bold 9700 (Research in Motion), HTC Droid Eris (Android), and Samsung Omnia II (Windows Mobile) all behaving in exactly the same way. They said they have spent over $100million in antenna testing facilities over the past 5 years and have 18 PhD scientists working on antenna design.

They then talked about the return rate and fault call rate as being much lower than the iPhone 3, but did acknowledge that the iPhone 4 drops more calls than the 3GS however this was stated as being less than 1 call per 100 more than the 3G.

They also said that they were aware of the issues with the proximity sensor and would issue a software fix in the next release to address these issues.

After saying all this they did state 3 considerations:

1.  if you weren't happy you could return an undamaged iPhone 4 within 30 days for no fee

2. A free case - all iPhone 4s purchased by September 30th 2010 will receive a free case, if you purchased a bumper with your iPhone 4, Apple will refund that cost.

3. An IOS 4.01 upgrade which improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely.

USA Consumer report 'cannot recommend iPhone 4"

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Tuesday, 13 July 2010 13:36 greg

A very interesting post over at the USA Consumer report blog, where they say state that they cannot recommend the iPhone 4 due to the problems with the signal dropping if it is held in a certain way. They do suggest a fix by covering the gap with thick insulating tape or (perhaps) buying a case.

Interestingly they do state that it's score in all others tests rated it as the top smartphone

The iPhone scored high, in part because it sports the sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone, and even outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats and a built-in gyroscope that turns the phone into a super-responsive game controller.

They go on to say that if you want an iPhone without a masking tape fix then you should look at the iPhone 3GS until Apple comes up with a permanent and free fix for the signal droping issues.

Further develiopments highlighted over at The Register where they have evidence of Apple deleting any posts linking back to the consumer report.
